MYSTERY OF THE SEA.
A CORRECTED REPORT.
IS THE VESSEL LIKELY TO BE
THE WARATAH?
Received February 14, 9.40 a.m.
MELBOURNE, February 14.
The State Premier has received a cable'message from Capetown stating that the disabled steamer was not sighted by the Ulva, but was seen from Marion Island. She was going to the south-east under sail, and appeared to be travelling at a speed of about three knots.
A sealing party reported the matter to the captain of the Ulva.
The vessel carried all possible canvas. She was only seen once between snow squalls, and disappeared from view in a following squall. The weather was very cloudy at the time. The news has awakened fresh hope in those interested in the passengers. Captain Mitchell thinks the vessel, if she is the Waratah will now be in the vicinity of KergueJen Island and the ship's company may be quite safe there.
