ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
DISTRICT NURSE FUND tfAZAAR. Oui readers will remember that His worship the Mayor, Mr P. L. Holiings, called a public meeting on the 20th January, 1909, in the Borough Council Chambers, inviting all persona interested in the object of providing a district nurse to work amongst the sick and the poor, under the auspices of St. John Ambulance Association, and that the Borough Council Cambers was filled by an enthusiastic and representative body of citizens. It was then decided that the best means for rising the necessary funds would be by ■holding a monster bazaar, and the date was fixed for the 6th May last. Her Excellency, Lady Plunkett, who takes a keen ;and practical interest in the movement, graciously consented to be present, and to open the ;bazaar. Unfortunately she was unable'to be present on >'ie date chosen, and asked if it weie possible to postpone the bazaar. l»*e committee, after fully considering the position, decided to postpone it uitii Show Week, .and fbnkstothe efforts of the Trust Land- U'rust, and especially the Secretary, Mr Hathaway, they were enabled to secure the Town aaill and Drill halls for the whole of Show week. The committee have been industriously engaged during the past twelve months in an endeavour to hold one of the most successful and up-to-date bazaars ever held in the district, and as the personnel of the committee embraces every class and denomination in the town, it is certain that this worthy and charitable object will be an established fact, ss thJ result of their efforts. We have on previous occasions drawn atteution to the worthy and deserving nature of this movement, and trust that it will receive
the practice sympathy awS support that it deserves. E\*ery detail is , now well *n hand for the opening, g which takes place at 7.30 o'clock | to-night, when His Worship the | Mayor, Mr P L. Hollings, will set | the ball rolling. By the courtesy oi j the secretary we have been permitted | to view the different stalls, etc., and g the transformation of the Drill Hall I came as a revelation to us. All the | stalls have been artistically decor- i ated, and the different stallholders j have vied with each other in their | artistic efforts. A number of nikau palms were kindly forwarded to the committee for decorative purposes, and these have been placed in various positions giving the whoje a moat pleasing effect. Coming into the Drill Hall the first stall on the right is the Borough Councii Stall, next is the Nursing Guild Stall, and the bweet Stall; on the other side of the hall is the Plain Work Stall, the Fancy Stall, the Flower Stall and the Produce Stall. The platform in the Drill Hall has been tastefully arranged as a tea room, small tables have been artistically placed in differenet positions, and the walls, etc., nicely decorated. We feel certain that this stall will be much appreciated. It is under capable management, and we are given to un- J derstand that the very best of refresh- | ments will be provided. Tables have been erected in front |,of the platform for the purpose of placing the exhibits received for the cake competitions. On this table will also be placed the beautiful three-decker wedding cake, kindly presented to , the committee by Mr W. Wilkes, , baker. We are asked to remind intending competitors in the cake I competitions that their exhibits must be at the Drill Hall by 2 p,m, to-day, m that they may be judged. Various side-shows,—the Hessey Dredge, Aunt Sally, bran tub, bakers'oven, two liipsy tents, etc. —as well as a booth for soft drinks, have been erected. An up-to-date shooting gallery will be under the .control of the Masterton Rifle .Volunteers between the two halls. Entertainments will be given every night in the Town Hall under the directorship of Mr Gerald Branson; admission downstairs 6d, upstars Is. The programme for Monday night being a grand gymnastic display and comic boxing (Black v. White) by the Y.M.C.A. Physical Culture Class. Our readers will see that the great deal of woxrk has been accomplished by the committee, and it now remains with the public to show in a practical manner that their efforts are appreciated.
