PAHIATUA NEWS.
,(<From 'Our Resident Reporter).. Saturday. This afternoon a horse attached to ■■& gig belonging to Mr A. Waldin, of Hamua, took fright and bolted in Main stieet. Turning a sharp corner into Wakeman street the wheel of the,gig hit the curbing, severing the body from the wheels and shafts, the former and the ' only occupant, a small lad, coming to mother earth, wnile the horse, with the other part of the gig, careered madly along for some distance. The boy received a nasty gash on the leg, and was taken into Mr Txacy Wills' shop for attendance. A young lady, wheeling her bicycle across the road, from the Club Hotel to the opposite corner, had a marvellous escape from accident, as the runaway dashed round the corner, she with great presence of mind, dropped the bicycle and just managed to get clear in time, while the gig went over part of the front wheel of the
bicycle. The first red deer reported to have been seen in the Pahiatua County, was noticed the other day in the vicinity of Makairo. It is thought that/the stag came from beyond Pongaroa. Many Pahiatua residents contem plate making the trip to Masterton on Wednesday next, on the occasion of People's Day of the Masterton A. and P. Show. The special trains arranged for, by the Show Committee, suit the requirements of xhe people of this district wishing to attend the Show. One of Mr Russell Grace's children has the misfortune to, break an arm ] on Thursday last. The little one,' who is now doing well, was attended , to by Dr. Dawson. The Borough workmen of late, have been busy tarring and sanding some of the footpaths in the town. A footpath, which is to be huped will not be overlooked, is that in Main street .south on the .eastera side. This footpath is in need of repairs., and is used by people visiting the local hospital. While on this subject, it seems a good suggestion, if the Pahiatua County Council were approached on the subject of farming a footpath from the Borough boundary to the Hosptal gate, a distance of some five .chains. The .road, which is used considerably, gets very muddy in the winter time, and the piece of work in question would be of great benefit. The Hospital Trustees who, I understand, at the present time have a good credit balance, might also be approached on the matter of a lamp at the main entrance Several local farmers are journeying to Wellington to-day to attend the wool sales in Wellington next weekAt the Woodville School picnic,* which was held in the Recreation
Ground, the prizes for attendance, and also those donated by various citizens, were presented to the scholars by Mr R.. B. Ross, M.P.. There was a cood attendance at the picnic, and the teachers were kept very busy attending to the wants >of the little ones. This morning the County Clerk (Mr G. Moore) showed me some specimens of coal, which had been lett at the County office by the foreman of the County teams. The specimens were obtained from the Tiraumea River at Hull s bridge, Kohunui, and were found amongst river metal. They had evidently been washed down from the river, or one of the deep creeks flowing into the river. Mr Moore stated that the coal when put on a fire burned well, ileaving a white ash. The annual school picnic in connection with the tfallance School is to be held about the first week in March.
As the present season has been a good one for all branches of horticulture, the Committee of the Woodville Horticultural and Industrial Society, expect to have good competiton at their annual Show, which takes place on March 2nd. Messrs Husband and Finch, land agents, disposed of Mr Lawson's Woodville property of 400 acres, to Mr Wibley, of Oringi,.at a very satis factory figure, the other day.
