THE SOUTH POLE.
FRIENDLY RIVALRY, CAPTAIN SCOTT'S VIEWS. ASSISTANCE EXPECTED FROM AUSTRALASIA. UnitedtPress Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received February 13, 5 p.m. LONDON, February 12. Captain Scntt stated that RearAdrairal Peary did not start the American Antarctic expedition until he received an assurance from the promoters of the British expedition that they welcomed friendly rivalry. Captain Scott is arranging for cooperation with the American expedition as regards meteorological and magnetic matters. He considers that the Americans have a longer route, but possibly it will be easier. His present knowledge suggests tha-t there is a gradual slope from thePole to the Weddell Sea. The main difficulty will be suitablewintering in a spot on Coat's Land. Captain Bartlett, aboard the Roosevelt, starts on September Ist, and coals finally at Punta Arenas in December. The l Antarctic night will be spent near the 18th parallel.. The expedition will rely upon dogs, including six,, which were sent to the North Pole with the Rear-Admiral.
Captain Sctot has collected £32.000, enough for the ship and out fit, and is seeking to raise a further £B,OOO in Britain for salaries, and a further sum in Australia and New Zealand. There are already over 7,000 applications for posts in the expedition, and applications are still pouring in.
