AUSTRALIA v. WELLINGTON. AN EVEN START. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 11. Magnificent weather prevailed this afternoon, when the Australians commenced their New Zealand tour with the match against the local eleven. The wicket was in excellent run getting ordet, and the outfield fast. About 2,000 spectators watched the pr.'.ccvd'rg?. Wellington won the toss, and elected to take advantage of the wicket provided, but made a sorry display with the bat, and only the serviceable stand by Patrick and Roberts for the ninth wicket saving the team from a complete rout. Patrick (25) executed some wristy forceful strokes, and Roberts played soundly for 17. BlacKlock contributed 14 and Midlane 10, and the innings closed for 107.

Witty secured 3 for 16, Emery 2 tor 48, Facy 2 for 7, Kellewav 2 for 16, Simpson 1 for 5. Witty bowled splendidly, keeping an excellent length, and swinging in from both sides.

The visitors were never called unon to exert themselves in the field.

The Australians threatened a big score, 66 being on the sheet for the loss of only two wickets, thereafter the excellent bowling of Patrick and Kinvig altered the complexion of affairs, and at the drawing of stumps 8 wickets were down for 122 (Simpson 51, Kelleway 24, Smith 17). Simpson gave a brilliant exhibition of clean forceful hitting, scoring 40 off three overs of Hickey. The Wellington fielding was not up to the high water mark of excellence. AUCKLAND'S GOOD START. j By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCLAND, February 11. The representative cricket match for the Plunket Shield between Auckland and Otago was commenced here to-day, in perfect weather, and on ar excellent wicket. Auckland won the toss, and decided to bat, the result being that at the close of the day's play the local teams' score stood at 391 for six wickets. The batting was at times brilliant, the runs made by Hemus (109), and Relf (118) being compiled by correct and stylish play. There was considerable interest in Macartney's appearance at the bowling crease, but up to a certain period the Aucklanders not only played him with confidence, but scored freely off him.
