A fitter patched up* the hole ' -■■ with spun yarn, but it was not effective. He tried to get repairs at various points, but the several stations I were not furnished with proper appliances. When he reached Ararat he reported the state of the engine, but as there was no other available he had to go on. At Stowell the litter had not sufficient materal to complete the repairs, and be had to take the train back to Ballarat. He consulted with Coward, driver of the second engine (who was killed in the accident), and asked him—though it was contrary to regulations —to take charge of the train from Coward's engine, owing to the defecij tive condition of Gronn's engine. After leaving Ararat the detect increased, and his engine was practically without brake power. On reaching Beaufort the signals were all right, but on approaching the station the.train got out of control and dasbed against the dead ends.
