S. MATTHEW'S GARDEN FETE.
A PRONOUNUED SUCCESS. The promoters of the GardenfFeteJ in aid of S. Matthews Church Building Fund, were more fortunate with the weather renditions yesterday, than on the former occasion, when the unruly elements necessitated a postponement of the Fete. Enticed by an ideal summer's day and an attractive proeramme, large numbers of people from both town and country patronised the Fete. Mr W. H. • Beetham's beautifully laid out: erounds are admirably suited for such an occasion, and it need hardly j be stated that much of the success I of the day was due to this fact. The arrangements were carried out in a most capable and thorough manner, and the success of the Fete is a tribute to the efforts of the committees. The beautifully decorated etalls were Jaden. with a profuse assortment of articles, and throughout the day I those in charge were kept Very busy ; attending to the wants of patrons. Refreshment stalls, afternoon tea and cool drinks were under the supervision of a capable staff of assistants, and they experienced a very busy time during the afternoon. A splendid programme of sporis and amusements was provided, and In the competitions some close and exciting finishes were witnessed. This-was particularly the case in the golfputting events, tennis, quoits, tilting the ring on bicycles, and nail driving. The proceedings were very much enlivened by the rendering of. a splendid programme of music from the Keihana Boyes orchestra. The stall and stall holders were as follow:-Art stall. Mesdames W. H. Hosking, W. JB. Chennells, C. A. Tabuteau, Watson, Cook and Miss B. Vallance, assisted by Misses Jackson (2). and E. Archer: Fish pond, Misses Beatrice Mackersey and Chris Hosking; Sweet stall, Misses Beetham, Bennett, Mace, Baird; Tea Kiosk, MesdamesgWinzenberg, u. A. Jones, Uren, R. E. Jones, assisted by Misses Moore, Collie and Winzenberg (2); Cool drinks, Misses Hettie Robins, Madge Townsend and E. Mayow; Gipsy tent, Miss Ella Wyett; Flower stall, Mesdames H. Beelham, Geo Sellar, Gawith, Misses Gawith and Vallance.
THE EVENING. The attendance in the evening was even larger than during the afternoon. The grounds were beautifully illuminated with many coloured fairy lanterns, and the scene presented was one of great animation. Miss Kendall's pupils entertained those present with an exhibition of Maynole dancing, which was most ereditably'performed. Afterwards an open-air concert, under the supervis ion of Mr G. Branson, was held,' and proved a decided succeps. The following programme was presented: — Orcheestra, overture; Mr F. H. Elcoate, "Farewell Marguerita"; Miss Jago, "Carmencita"; Mr E. R. Wilson, recitation "Snorkins"; M W. Jago, "Sweet Adeline"; Mr W. Iggulden, "The Veteran's Song"; Mrs Ashton. ''Down the Vale"; Mr H. F. Gresn, "Thora"; Mjss Jaeo and F. H Elcoate, "Watchman, what of the night"; Mr Clayton, "Three for Jack"; quartette, "Johnnie Schmoker.'
