The South Wales colliery owners claim damages from the Miners' Union for refusal to work the extra sixty hours allowed under the Eight Hours Act, aggregating £300,000 sterling. The colliers have retaliaed by claiming payment for short coal, for which the existing agreement does not enforce payment. The Northumberland miners continue to fiercely oppose the three shifts system. It is expected that the Northumberland ballot next week will order a strike. The Right Hon. T. Burt, who was tor many years secretary of the Miners' National Union reports that the situation is grave, and there is great risk of a general strike, which he deprecates.
