CRICKET.
The Mauriceville juniors have forfeited to S. Matthew's A. The leading topic in cricket matters this week is the proposed visit of the Australian Eleven to Masterton on February 4th and sth. The Wairarapa representatives left yesteday, (Friday) for Napier to try conclusions with the Hawke's Bay team. The local team was particularly weak both in bowling and batting, and the result of the match is easily forecasted. Mastertnn and Carlton seniors commenced their match on Saturday and when stumps were drawn things were still at a very interesting stage —Carlton's first innings closing for a total of 154 runs, and Masterton having seven wickets down for 108 runs. R. Moss (Carlton) was top scorer m .the match with 39, Moorhouse (Masterton) 36, being close up. Mascelles has the be3t bowling average so far for the match. Thursday cricket was postponed last week, it is alleged because the wickets were too wet. The secretary of the Auckland Cricket Association has received advice from the secretary of the Hawke's Bay Association that his Association intends to challenge Auckland for the Plunket Shield. The match will probably be played some time in February. The gate at the Sheffield Shield mateh between Victoria and South Australia produced £261, some 8,000 persons being present. Laver captained the Victorians and Clem Hill the Adelaide men. Board, the Hawke's Bay coach, took eecond place on the English wicket keeping averages last season. He played in twenty-two matches, taking 69 wickets out of 309 that fell—percentage 22.3. Carters per centage for Australia was only 11.3, and Carkeek's 6.0. A ''crack" all the way on English wickets, Frank Laver is not a success on the hard, matter-of-fact Australian pitches. He headed the Australian averages last trip, but one for 62 and one for 64 off fifty-three overs does not exactly spell success in Australia. Soon after reaching South Africa the members of the M.C.C. English team were invited to attend a social function at Newlands, but exception was taken to differentiation between the amateurs and professionals on the programme. of the Eng-« lish team was held, and it was decided not to attend. It is believed that the share of the Australians from theJEnglish rour is over £450 each* ->■!>«« - South Wales at thellSydney.2 Cricket Ground on the 9Th7l^South*fAustra lia has cwon the Sheffield|Shield a, second time, the j first victory taking place jl6 years i ago. To win the match against New South Wales with such a weak team (in the absence of C. Hill, D. R. A. Gehrs, C. E. Dolling, W. A. Hewer, N. Claxton and R. B. R»ies) is a very big performance, especially as thi victorioui team is about the weakest that has ev_r represe >tecl South Australia at Sydney. An Australian writer says: TIu 3 selection of the second Australian team to visit New Ztala<.d is creating * Rood deal of i.jceivst thmiGrghnit tv.e ooaniioiiWdaltli. Ic is about lime the tciam was chosen, and perhaos it would have been hut for the desire of the Souih Australian Association to have the selectors appointed by the Board of Control, the meeting of which will not take place until per. haps late in January. It is likely that the only members of the 1909 Australian will secure inclusion are the younger men, though that does not necessarily mean that the combination will be for that rnas:)n weak, as Bardalev and Ransford may be chosen.
