MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present,—Messrs G. C. Summerell chairman), C. E. Danieil, J. C. Ewington, J. Hunter, Donald Donald, V. Donald, A. Henderson, M. Caselberg, W. B. Chenr-.ells, J B. Keith, H. C. Robinson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. B. Moodie, F. W. Carey, and J. D. Cruickshank. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., wrote stating that.he had written to the Department supporting the Chamber's application for establishment of a mail service between Masterton ?nd Flat Point via Gladstone and Te Wharau. A communication was also received from Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., intimating that the Postmaster-Gen-eral had recommended a continuation of the previous service, viz.,twice a week from Masterton as well as from Carterton, but the Masterton tender was so high that the Department refused to entertain it. He had reason, however, to think that the Department would accept a tender on the same lines as the old contract. The Postmaster-General wrote stating that if the direct mail communication from Masterton to Te Wharau, Land's End and Flat Point, could be secured for £6O per annu m it would be continued. The former price was £45. The matter was discussed and on the motion of the chairman it was decided to grant £2 10s annually towards the Masterton-Flat Point mail service. The report submitted to the Minister for in connection with the new railway timetable was adopted. The Nelson Chamber of Commerce wrote forwarding the following resolutions:—That a circular setting forth the advantages of through freights be prepared, and sent to the various Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony, asking that united representations be made to the Government Railway Department to a system of through booking from point to point, whether by all rail and steamer, or rail, steamer, and road carriages where necessary. It was decided to support the motion. The New Zealand Shipping Gazette Printing and Publishing Company, Ltd., wrote placing their publication at the disposal of the Chambers of Commerce for the purpose of recording transactions of the various chambers. It was decided to subscribe to the publication if other leading chambers also did so.
