BUYERS OPERATING FREELY
PRICES WELL MAINTAINED,
Received January 20, 10 50 a.m. | LONDON. Janaury 19. | At the wool sales there was a larse \ selection of merinos. All sections of the trade are operating. American sorts maintained November rates, top-makiDg sorts reaching 10 per cent, higher. At yesterday's sales, 8,428 bales were offered, including 1,118 of excellent New Zealand. There was a large attendance, in- I eluding many American buyers, and ] spirited competition from all quar- I turs. Merinos were firm at full Novem- J ber rates: fine cros3hreds advanced 5 per cent; and medium and coarse 10 per cent. ADVANCE IN CROSSBREDS. The Bank of iNew Zealand has re-., chived the following cable from tb,2ir London office, under date Janu ary 18th:— Wool. —The snles were opened with a strong competition, and a large attendance of buyers. There is an active demand by Home and foreign buyers. The market is strong fo»-c narse crosshreds prices are higher by 1\ to 10 per cent. Current prices for North Island, farmers' lots, Palmerston North style, average condition, are as under: — Coarse crossbreds, 36's to 40's, at IOJd to lid. Medium rrossbrads, 44's to 46's, at 12£ d to 13d. Fine crossbred, 44's to 46's, at ] 13id to 14£ d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London house, under date January 18th:—There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales today, competition by Home, Contin- ' ental and American buyers being active. The opening catalogues were fairly representative. As compared with Inst sales closing rates, prices are about 10 per cent, higher for medium and coarse greasy crossbreds. and about 5 per cent, to I\, per cent, higher for crossbred si ipe. The market for merinos and fine crossbreds is very firm. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., have received the following cable message from London, underdate January 18th:—The sales have opened with a large attendance of buyers, and competition 13 keen Americans Duying freely. Prospects are good, and the market firm for all sorts. Prices for fine crosbsred and ; merino are unchanged; medium . crossbred. 1\ per cent, up; coarse j do., 10 per cent. up.
Messrs Dalgety and Company. Lid., , report having received the following j cable messages from* their London I house, under date ol 18th instant:—j Wool. —Sales opened with a large at- | tendance of buyers, very animated | competition and a fair selection. As j compared wiith the closing rates of November series, prices for greasy medium crossbreds show a 7§ per cent, advance, and for greasy coarse crossbreds alO per cent, advance, whilst merinos and fine crossbreds are unchanged. Basils and bides.— Market steady. Leather—Market very firm. Rabbitskins. Sales closed firm. For full winter super. New Zealand rabbitskins any change in prices is in favour of sellers, whilst other descriptions of furriers are 10 percent, to 15 p«?r cent, higher; 1,800 bales were offered and 1,748 bales sold. Furriers bought 570 bales. Concerning the Adelaide wool sales, the following cable message has also been received by Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., from their Adelaide house, under date of the lth instant:—Wool.—Wool sales closed with a good attendance of buyers There as a nice assortment of Australian wools of a thoroughly representative character, including 4,000 bales from the South East of Australia, which were in very good demand. Eleven thousand bales were offered ana 9,500 D2les sold. Greasy crossbred wools, greasy merino, medium sorts, and greasy lamb's wool are Id higher. Wools suitable for America are in less demand.
