CONVICTION FOR FRAUDS.
Received January 19, 9.50 a.m. NEW YORK, January 18. After fighting in every court for two years, John Walsh, president of the Chicago National Bank, failed to secure the quashing of his convction. Walsh will now serve his sentence of five years' imprisonment forfraud. LONDON WOOL SALES. JANUARY SERIES OPENED. ADVANCE IN CROSSBREDS. Received January 19, 11.5 a.m. LONDON, January 18. The January series of wool sales has opened. Brisk business was done. Crossbreds advanced from 5 to 10 per cent. Received January 19, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, January 19. At the wool sales 8,428 bales were offered, including 1,118 bales of excellent quality from New Zealand. There was a large attendance, including many, American buyers. ) There was spirited competition from all quarters. Merinos were firm at full November rates. Fine crossbreds advanced 5 per cent, and medium and coarse 10 per cent. The Commerce and Tourist Division is in receipt of the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 18th January: —"The first series of colonial wool sales has commenced. There is great competition among the trade, America and the Continent being strong buyers. Trade is good and proepects favourable. Manufacturers are waiting for supplies. The New Zealand wools catalogued amount to 41,700 bales. Merino wool of all grades is very firm at the closing rates of last sales. Fine crossbreds show a rise of Id, and medium and coarse crossbreds have advanced fully Id per lb. Closing rates for December sales, as cabled by the High Commissioner, were as tollowSuperior merinos, Is Id to Is 3d; medium merinos, IOJd to Is l£d; inferior merinos, 8d to lOd, fine crossbreds, Is 2d to la 4d; medium crossbreds, Is J.J to !s 3d; coarse crossbreds, lOd to Is. Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the* following cablegram from their London agents, the National Mortgage and Agency Company, of New Zealand, Ltd., dated 18th inst.—Sales opened with a large attendance of buyers, Americana operating freely. Merinos and fin e crossbreds are firm on par with closing rates of last sales. Medium crossbreds have advanced 7\ per cent., coarse 10 per cent, sliped crossbred 7J per cent.
