MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.

THE CAR CAPSIZES. A PASSENGER SERIOUSLY HURI.

At about 11 o'clock last evening a motor car accident, of a rather serious nature, occurred at Upaki, near the railway crossing, adjacent to Mr A. H. Wrightson's property. A party of about seven who had been to the Pahiatua races were retaining to Ihe Lower Hutt in a large car ririvm by Mr C. Savage, Lower Hutt. All went well until the corner, which is a most difficult one, was reached. The driver applied the foot brake, which smashed, and at the same time one of the back tyres burst. These two mishaps, added to the fact that the car was turning the corner at the same time, caused a heavy strain to be thrown on to the wheel holding the blown out tyre, which collapsed instantly. The car immediately capsized on to its side, and the occupants, before they had time to realise what had happened, were all thrown out with considerable violence. It was at first thought that all had escaped injury, but on making £an examination it was found that Mr J. Armstrong, of Lower Hutt, had been badly hurt. Word wag immediately sent into Masterton for Dr Archer Hosking, and in a remarkably shurt space of time Mr A. Young arrived at the scene with the Ambulance brougham. The injured man was then removed to the Masterton Hospital, and although the extent of the injuries were not available last evening it is understood that he is in a very critical condition. The rest of thu Jparty arrived in .Masterton at about midnight, and all of them except for a few bruises esqaped injury. Included in the Wellington passengers were Messrs J. Waite, M. Ford, and Hughes. Mr W. M. Halley. of, Carterton, was also one of the occupants. The car, which is not seriously damaged, will - be brought into Masterton to-day.
