CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Monday. The annual nieetinc of the South Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association takes place here on Friday afternoon next. The Rifle Volunteers went into camp on Saturday evening, in Mr Eagle's property at Belvedere. An early start was made on Sunday, reveille sounding at 4 a.m. The "fall in" sounded at 4.30, blank ammunition was served out, and Sergeant Morgan was sent out with one section to take up a conct-aled defensive position on the hills. At a given signal the remainder of the men marched out to the attack, which wa3 followed in a most practical way. As the two parties came into close quarters the "cease fire" was sounded, and the men assembled again. The sergeants were then placed in temporary command of th e company with instructions to take up an outpost position along a neighbouring ridge, their work being subsequently examined by the officers. After breakfast the morning's work was criticised, and discussed, and then a similar operation was performed over entirely different ground, camp breaking up at 11 a.m. Mr J. Waterson has disposed of his property at Matarawa by exchange with a Mr Jeffries, of Waverley, and has leased his farm property to Mr Alex. Gallon.
