PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. GENERAL. The interment took place to-day of the late Mr W. Sargent, a large number of relatives and friends following the remains to their last resting place. There was a good att r niance of the public at the Auction Mart today, when Messrs and Co. disposad of live stock, fruit, vegetables, and various lines of a miscellaneous description. Weaner pigs brought 8* 3d, stores in good condition bringing from 14s to 13s. Poultry were bringing from 2s to 3s per pair, some ducklings being sold at 39 per pair. The Woodville cheese factory

which started operations at the beginning of the present aeason with 19 suppliers now as a total of 39- The largest supply of milk received this season was 1,900 gallons, the amount bow heir.g received showing a decline on this amount, owing to the turn of the season. Suppliers, however, state that the milk supply is keeping up well, and the test is improving considerably. Between £7OO and £BOO will be paid out on the 10th inst. for December's milk, this being at the rate of lOd per lb of butter fat. Around woodville there

seems to be a lot of good dairying country, and the milk supply at next season at both the cheese factory and the creamery will no doubt show a substantial increase as the Woodville people are now beginning to realise that there is something in the dairying industry. A resident living beyond Pongaroa states that it is a great pity that tfce people in the Pongaroa and adjacent districts do not enter into the subject of a light railway line from Masterton, with more vim. This year, my informant states, that people having wool to send away experienced considerable difficulty in getting their wool to the coast, and then often times when there, a delay of several days has occuried before the golden fleece has been safely delivered into the holds of the coastal boats. Metal, he states, is almost an unknown item, and if the railway were constructed,. a con • siderable amount of revenue could be derived from the carrying of metal, as the roads will have to be metalled with substantial gravel. The settlers in the districts mentioned should give this matter their earnest consideration. Entries for the Bush Districts A. and P. Show, which is being held at Woodville at the end of this month, close with the secretary, Mr J. H. Escott, on January 11th. The committee have been working hard of late, and given a fine day, it is anticipated that the show will eclipse all previous shows of the Association. The Manawatu Gorge has been literally thronged during the holiday season with picnic parties, many travelling from as far as Pahiatua and Palmerston North. The Woodville Foresters held their annual picnic in this favourite resort, and the gathering was a most successful

The road to Baker Town is iaid with pipes, and these are for the Baker Town water supply. The work is to be started on Monday. The Presbyterian church which is Hearing completion, stands out prominently amon<* the buildings of Woodville, and when completed the WoodviMe people will have a building of which they should be proud. The opening of the church is expected to take place about the end ef this month.

PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL The Pahiatua County Council held

their monthly meeting to-day, there being present—Councillors T. Hodgins (chairman), H. Cornelius, S. Bolton, H. F. Cuom, R. Smith, A. Ross, T. Quirk and J, D. Piper. A letter from Mr P. J. Murphy, drawing attention to the dangerous state of the road leading to bis house, was received without discussion.

An application from Mr E. J. Chaffe to lease the Marima reserve met with some opposition from some of the councillors on the ground that it bad been granted by the Land Board for recreation purposes, and

there was £IOO on the estimates for fencing it. Others pointed out that drovers were the only one 3 that used the reserve, and considered the council was entitled to make something out of it even by letting from y ar to year Eventually it was decided that the chairman and councillors for the riding visit the reserve in company with the Engineer and report at the next meeting of the Council. The Engineer, on the application of Mr W. H. Biightwe'l. was instructed to report on the state of the roads in Hall's estate. A letter from J. G. Gilmour, asking for payment for repairing McFarlane's and Marima bridges, was referred cu a sub-committee to finally deal frith. Mr G. W. Priest wrote asking to have the Woodville-Aohanga road opposite J. D. Piper's property widened, and it was decided to proceed with the work as soon as the'"thirds" were available. A letter was received from tt'e Commissioner of Crown Lands, stating the Land Board had approved of the proposed expenditure ot £373 16s 6d, accrued thirds which would be placed tj the credit of the Counc-,1 at an early date. Advice was received that the amount of loan grants (amounting to £836) for the Council's share of the cost df the Lower Gorge bridge had been remitted to the credit of the Council.

The Oroua County Council forwarded an amended statement showing the Pahiatua County Council's share in the cost of the Lower Gorge

bridge to be £B5l 12a 6d,and explain ing that the Government had declined to pay the subsidy on supervising and advertising expenses. An application from the County Clerk, Kuiranga, for payment ot £54 maintenance of the Gorge Road was granted.
