CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
WON BY MASON. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 8. The final game in the Chess Championship was concluded this morning. Grierson's sealed move was probably not his strongest. Masun pushed on his attack, winning a piece on the 24th move. Later on he added a pawn, which disorganised the position of Grierson's forces, and on the 41st move Grierson resigned.
The new Chess Champion, Mr John Mason, is one of the five Wellington nominees at the contest. He was some years ago a resident of Palmerston North, and has competed at seven Congresses. He has been a prize winner on no less than six occasions. In fact he and Mr Davies (another Wellington player) may be bracketed as New Zealand s most consistent Congress perftrmers of the present decade. He has tied twice for the coveted championship, but on each occasion lost the plsy-off game. He has twice won the Brilliancy Prize in the last six years. The runne-up, Mr J. C. Grierson, lass been by far the most successful player in Auckland during the past fifteen years. ,In 1895 he won the championship of the Ponsonby Chess Club, and also the gold medal for the Auckland District Championship. During the next thirteen years his record for the Auckland ship was a remarkably consistent one—viz.', 7 firsts, 5 seconds, and 1 fourth. At Dunedin, Christmas, 1902 he won the New Zealand Championship, this being the only occasion that the title has gone to Auckland.
