SCULLING.
THE WANGANUI HANDICAP. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, January 9. The final for the Wanganui Firstclass Sculling Handicap took place on Saturday afternoon. The weather waa fine, and there was a fairly good attendance. Three steamers each with a iull complement of passengers followed the races. The Consolation Handicap, which was rowed first, was the more interesting. The seven scullers were well together after the fhst quarter of a mile. Shortly after the mile was passed, Kemp, who was leading, went under the right bank ahead of Dick Green and Felton, the others being bunched u - der the left bank. It was a great race between Green and Kemp, but the latter had held his own, and won by a length and a quarter. In the Mitchell, Bob Green and Larsen had been struggling under the left bank, Larsen eventually being given third place, three-quar-ters of a length ahead of Mitchell, j Bob Green close up. Time, 13min I 32sec. The first mile was rowed in i 6min 15sec. In the final for the Sculling Handicap the rowing was somewhat disappointing. At the mile Hagney was leading Webb by eight or nine feet, and Arnst was half a length behind Webb, when the latter suddenly stopped, the strain of Thursday's race evidently making itself felt at this point. Arnst, who never varied his long swinging stroke, gradually overtook Hagney, who he passed at the mile and ahalf, and led to the finish, winning by a little over a length. The first mile was covered in 6min 15sec. and the whole distance occupying 13min 32sec. Arnst has received a communication from Sydney, stating that £250 will be forthcoming for the match with Pearce on the Parramatta river.
