TRAMWAY FATALITY.
» By Teleeraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 7. The woman who lumped off the Papanui train last night and was killed has been identified as Mrs Ellen Butler, aged 58, a housekeeper for Maurice Harris. Innes Road, Papanui. It is not clear whether s-he fell or stepped off the tram. The conductor only saw her s'rike the ground. She lived only fifteen minutes after reaching Dr Russell's house. At the inquest on Ellen But'er, a passenger stated that she saw Mrs Butler step off the car whilst it was travelling at a good pace. She appeared to fall heavily and skidded along the ground. Apparently deceased thought the car had stopped when she stepped off. The conductor stated that he bad no recollection of deceased asking him to stop the car at any particular place. At the time of the accident the car was travelling between twelve and fifteen miles an hour. Another witness identified the de ceased as the wife of Patsey Butler A verdict of accidentally killed was returned.
