BRITISH TRADE IN CANADA.

INCREASE IN FREIGHTS. STRONG PROTESTS. Received January 7, 11.25 p.m. OTTAWA, January 7. Strong protests made in Canada against the increases, averaging 25 per cent, in westward freights, particularly affecting British soft goods.

Canadian merchants allege that the Canadian North Atlantic West Bound Freight Conference was controlled by American manufactures. Mr Grigg, British Trade Commissioner in Canada, states'that the increase would strike a staggering blow at British trade.
