The death is reported of Mr James O. Russell, a settler in the Pohangina He was formerly a resident of Valley, near Wellington, and was 34 years of sge. He leaves a wife and two children. His death is much regretted by the settlers, as he was prominent in ail movements for the advancement of the district. The death is reported of an old pioneer, Mr Tom Burness, of Caboni, Rakiraki, wbo passed away on December 20th, writes the Fiji correspondent of the "New Zealand Herald." After serving in many a severe action in the Waikato and elsewhere under Von Tempsky, he came to Fiji in 1870, and ever since has been heart and soul in planting. His efforts to encourage cotton-grow-ing alone made his work valuable.
