WRECK OF THE WAIKARE.

VESSEL IN A PERILOUS POSITION.

By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 5. The Waikare is in a perilous position. It is feared her back will break. From the meagre information sup ■ plied it is quite clear that the damaged steamer was beached in remarkably quick time. This was necessary owing to the depth of water in the immediate vicinity. The Waikare was making her fourteenth trip to the Sounds, and this was the first occasion on which she had met with any mishap. The Moura left Port Chalmeers at 5.20 this morning, and arrived at the Bluff to-night. She expects to meet the Pioneer, returning from Dusky Bay. It necessary, the Moura will proceed to the Waikare's. assistance. The tug Terawhiti, with salvage equipment, under control of Mr Daniels, the Union Company's salvage expert, will be ready to leave Wellington to-night, if advised that it is necessary. The Rosamond arrived at the Bluff this morning, having passed Puysegur Point in the night without being intercepted. As the Pioneer has proceeded* to the scene the Rosamond will not go. The Waikare is badly damaged. The exact scene of the Waikare wreck is between Indian Island and Passage Isle. The first report stated that the vessel had sunk in ten minutes. Commander Blunt, of the Pioneer, as soon as he was informed by Sir Joseph Ward of the urgency of the position, had coaling operations and provisioning in full swing. The warship is expected to make twenty knots. The Rosamond, from Westport, will be signalled at Puysegur, and will turn bade to Dusky Island if necessary. WELLINGTON, January 5. . The Pioneer passed Puysegur Point returning from Dusky. Sound at 8 o'clock to night, and is expected to reach the Bluff about 2 a.m.
