WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB.
SUMMER MEETING.
(By "Zetland.") That all important factor towards the success of outdoor gatherings — fine weather—favoured the Club yesterday, and there was a large attendance of the public. The train arrangements from the North were unsatisfactory, consequently the district above Masterton was not represented as fully as usual. The Masterton South Band played a very creditable programme of music, and considerably enlivened the proceedings. Fourteen bookmakers were in attendance, and effected good business, and the sum of £6,591 was put through the totaiisator, as against £7,824 last year. The course was in first-class order, and very fast, the times registered in four events being as good as are generally run on Metropolitan tracks. Racing opened with the Juvenile Handicap. Killaloe was the popular fancy, and won easily from the outsider, British Maid. Sir Solo moved short in his preliminary, and did not run prominently. Pukewai was made a firm favourite for the Tawaha Hack, although Chauvelin was also well backed. The Waiuku colt got to the front entering the straight, ard running very gamely won easily from Chavuelin. Rose Herald was | prominent for five furlongs, but then fell back, and First Consul, who filled third place, is improving. The i Racing Club Handicap proved to be a runaway race for No Trumps, who i led from start to finish. She was I turned out i» splendid condition by R. Knox, and was most capably ridden by T. L. Catt, who used good judgment throughout. Tumut ran a I good race, but Ris tori failed to go \on after running seven furlongs. Hilarian was the popular selection for the Wharepapa Hack. Marionus and Merrie Emerald were, responsible for most of the running, but Hilarian went to the front when called upon, and scored comfortably. First Battery was looked upon as a certainty for the Ruamahanga Hack, but was slow to move, and Palestine getting away in fine style led throughout, and won by three lengths from the favourite. The withdrawal ot" Longner, Advantage, Aboriginal, Purakau, and Thera left only three to do battle in the Russell Handicap. Although burdened with 9st 111b. Full Rate was made a strong favourite. Warlock carried him along at a strong pace, and once into the straight the outsider, Sunbonnet, joined the leaders, and in a fine finish scored by a head. First Battery was brought out again for the Pirinoa Hack, but this time Succession proved victorious, the Field Battery colt having to be content with second place. The racing was brought to a conclusion with the Rawiri Handicap. Waiata was made a slightly better favourite than Splash. Purakau cut out the running to the home turn, where Waiata got to the front and holding his place won j by two lengths. Results :
