LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The annual meeting of the Methodist Sunday Sehool teachers and officers will be held in the schoolroom this evening. Among other important business to be transacted will be the election of officers for the ensuing year. At the usual morning service at the Methodist Church yesterday, opportunity was taken to unveil the memorial stained-glass window, which has been placed in the church. The window was presented by Mr F. W. Temple in memory of his late wife, and is of a very artistic charcter. The window bears the following inscription:—"To the glory of God, and in memory of Eleaner Mary Temple, uho died on January 18th, 1903." The Rev. C. E. Porter, in unveiling the window, spoke briefly on the value of women in 'the Christian church.
Vital statistics for Masterton show that there, were ten itiarriages during the month just passed, eight deaths and twenty three births. During the year there were seventy-nine marriages, 75 deaths and 273 births, as against 93, marriages, 9.5 deaths and 309 births for the previous year. Commencing from to-day, the letter carriers' delivery in the afternoon will be extended along West Bush and Upper Flaiu Roads as far. as the Kft it una Cheese Factory, and a daily mail will be despatched to Wainuawa, closing at Masterton at 1 p.m. and at Waingawa at 3 p.m. daily, except Thursdays, when it will despa'cned at 8 a.m.. from Masterton ami noon from Waingawa.. , The Pahiatua Bowling Club will be represented at the Bowling Tournament in Wellington, commencing on January 10th. by two rinks comprised of the following players:—Messrs J. W. Mills, C. J. Norton, W. H. Hawkinp, T. Hewat (skip), and E. Petherick, Juhn Hughes, Mcßratney, Wakeman, (skip). These players will leave f.r Wellington on January 8;h. A commencement was made on Friday'last with tbe erection of the new class-room at the Methodist Sunday School for the Junior Young Men's Bible Class. The building will face Lincoln Road, and will come right out to the footpath, and the size i* 13ft by 27ft. The young men of the class are building the room themselves, 'and expect to have it ready for use by Sunday week.
The services at the Methodist Church yesterday were conducted by the Rev. C. E. Porter, the attendances being good on both occa sions. Mr Porter's address in the morning was of a special-New Year character, his subject being "Buying the Opportunities." He based his remarks on the text: "Redeeming the time, because the-days are evil." In the evening Mr Porter took as his subject, "The Changing Fashion." There was only one bankruptcy in theMasterton distict for the month sf December, as against four for tiie same month last year. There were eight bankruptcies during the quarter and similar number for the same period in tbe year 1908. During the year there were twenty-seven bankruptcies, as against twenty five for the previous year. Only ten of the former actually, occurred in the town, six coming from Maryborough and the rest from the surrounding district.
j Ibe morning broke gloriously fine t for the annual picnic of the Master«ton Methodist Sunday School on Saturday last (New Year's Day.) Mr Macara had kindly given the use % of his property at Akura, which is an admirable picnic ground. Brakes left the school at . nine ' o'-'clock in the morning for the ground, and altogether about 250 children attended, as well as a number of adults. During the forenoon'and the whole of the afternoon games were indulged In, and a number of interesting cricket matches played. Numerous races for the children Were run. first and second prizes being given to the winners of each race. The Young Men's Class had charge of the races. The catering was in the hands of the Methodist Ladies' Guild. Altogether a very enjoyable day was spent. A Press Association telegram states that the "New Zealand Times" is authorised to deny the statement emanating from Christchurch that Mr Justice Denniston will retire from the Bench after a year's holi' day, and will then make his home in Scotland. The , facts are that Mr Justice Denniston has been suffering for some time from the effects of the strain of his work, and has been granted a year's leave of absence from Ist February. He leaves for England on January 21st, and will return.
A pair of gold rimmed spectacles, lost between Grey town and Masterton, are advertised for.
A special meeting of the Masterton County Council will be held on January 11th, t'j decide the statutory closing day for the ensuing year.
A reward is offered for the recovery of a goid watch and chain, lost on the Masterion-Carterton Koad, or in Carterton, on New Year's Eve.
