WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

(By "Zetland")* Ideal w.eather ruled on New Year's Day, and the Tauherenikau course and surroundings were seen at their best. The attendance of the public was large and representative, the arrangements in connection with the meeting well up-to-date, and some excellent racing was witnessed throughout. The newly laid out course, with a longer straight and better turns than formerly, proved to be a great improvement, and as expected some fast times were registered. The Masterton South Band played a much appreciated programme of music. Seven bookmakers on the lawn and six in the outside division plied their calilng, and effected good business, while the amount put through the totalisator was £B,3U, as against £9,190 last year. Mr J. H. Tilson was successful in hi a starting work, although in some instances he had several erratic contestants to deal with.

Racing commenced with the Maiden Hack, which brought out sixteen starters. Pukewai waa made favourite, and getting away well never left the issue in doubt, winning comfortably from Mania and Palestine. For the Tuhitarata Handicap, six starters, Boanerges was seiecr-td as the'most likely winner. Waiata was responsible for the scroncr pa:e set, but the favourite got to the front when called upon, and had little difficulty in scoring from Splash and Wainta. ' Offsix competitors in the Rimutaita Hack, Chauvelin and first Consul were the best backed. Skye was responsible for most of the running, but .fell back at the nome turn, ancf Chauvelin then went to the front, and won easily from Happyj New

1 Year, who ran surprisingly well considering she was not handled to Seat advantage. Ten starters were saddled up for the Wairarapa Cup, of 400 govs, one miie and a quarter. *The English bred mare Ringdove, owned by Messrs W. G. and G. li. Stead, of Christchurch, was made a slightly better favourite than the Manawatu Cup winner, Merrivonia, while Tumut, who had not previously raced over the distance, was also solidly supported, Truganini and Tumut were the pacemakers for a mile, when Ringdove went up. Tumut led into the straight,' but half way down fell back ar.d with a strong run Ringdove took pride of place. In a splendid finish she just lasted long enough to beat Merrivonia by a short head, while Merrie Zealand was only a neck aVay third. No Trumps was fourth and Tumut fifth. The race was one of the best seen at Tauherenikau for some time, and being won by one of the principalstables in the Dominion, the Club will be brought into greater prominence than ever. Past winners of the race are as fbllow:—

The Soult filly GJnss was mada a strong favourite for the Nursery Handicap, but Killaiue lot smartly away, and won from end to end. The winner is bv Kilcheran-Prelude, and as both sire anil dam were brilliant performers, he " should prove useful. ■ . ' ;•'

First Battery was first choice for the Pukio Hack, but Warloch was in charze throu?hnut, and wpri very easily from Merrie Land and the favourite. , • ;

The Reynolds'Hatu'icJip proved to bean easy coittst /or ■full Rate. He v\::h first away, and never being huacied.finished a hng'th' in front of ' Sunbonnet, who uid not finish as strongly as usual. Kt se Htraid, Hilaria and Waxy were supported spiritedly for the co cluding esent, the IvioKai Welter. Epsom Downs and Hilarian were prominent at the straight entrance, but Waxy had the race in safe keeing, and won by a . length and a half from Hilarian. After winning the Maiden Hack—the first race run on the newly Jaid out course—-on Pukewai, Sid Reid was presented with a gold mounted whip donated by Mr Josiah Tocker, wbo for many years was custodian at Tauherenikau.
