A FEARFUL TRAGEDY.
MELBOURNE, December 31. A fearful tragedy is reported from Cosgrove, near Dookie, 156 miles north-east of Melbourne, where Lena Clugston, a farm labourer's wife, shot her four children herself with a pea rifle. When neighbours reached the house they found Maggie (aged seven years), and Violet (aged three) were dead, and Rossie and Willie (eight and two years respecwounded, the latter dangerously, while the mother was wounded in the stomach. The woman, who is believed to be demented, evidently placed the weapon against the children's bodies, each-shot taking effect beneath the heart. Asked to give a reason for the crime, the mother merely replied: "Thev caused it." She left a letter for her husband, who was absent at work ut tlie time. Received January 2, 5.5 p m. MELBOURNE, January 2. Mrs Clugston is suffering from puerperal mania. She gave birth to a child prematurely at the hospital. The condition of one of the wounded children is such that it is not expected to recover.
