Theil position was an honourable one, but in cases of this kind that was an aggravation of the offence rather than I a mitigation. They were accused of influencing their fellows against the law, and they could not have done so if they were not men whom their fellows trusted. They had used their qualities to fight the community and bring about a calamity to the country, and they could not now make a poor mouth when the facts were brought home to them. He could not see his way to reduce the fine, but would allow a month in which to pay. A number of the men refused the concession, preferring gaol, but after consulting their counsel agreed 10 accept time to pay. AN APPEAL TO BE MADE IN NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph—Press Association.
