PAHIATUA NEWS.

* From Our Resident Reporter. Tuesday, The rains which fell here on Christmas Day and Sunday last have had a beneficial effect on the pasture 3, and the roads in this district arid the I ■country is now looking remarkably green for this time of the year. Much to the dairyman's delight, the milk supply has shown a slight -.ncrease. Special Christmas services were held at the various churches on Christmas Day and Sunday evening. The annual pi :nic and sports will be held this year as usual at Makuri on New Year's Day, and the commit fee report all arrangements well in han !. The funeral of the late MrsProaser, wife of Mr V. J. Prosser. »)f the local staff of the W.F.C.A., took plice this morning, and was followed oy a large number of sympathisers. A man named F. Scrimshaw, aged 63. was found dead near the Mangatainoka Hall last night. An inquest Wiil be held.

The sum of £fiO 16s was taken at the gates at the Mangatainoka sportc jesterday. This sum, I understand, is exclusive of members' tickets sold. The ball in the evening in the Library Hal), was a decided success, anithe building, although recently enlarged, was packed, a most enjoyable evening being spent. Tie special trains run to the Mangatainoka sports yesterday were well patronised and many outsiders made the journey. The sports seem favoured as far as fine days are concerned, as I understand that yester day was the eleventh fine day the committee had experienced. A short time ago the Chamber of Commerce setup a holiday committee to go into the matter of arranging holidays for the year, and, this com mittee decided to make Monday next, January 3rd, a holiday, so as to allow shopkeepers and assistants to have a good New Year's holidays. However, this arrangement, although an admirable one, does not suit a portion of our local shopkeepers, and they have notified the public that they intend to remain open on that day, and the situation is causing much commsnt ia town. The Chamber of Commerce have done a lot of good for Pahiatua and district, and it is a great pity that this split has occurred.
