A LAND BOOM.
An astonishing land boom has been in full swing for some time in Western Canada. A London paper reported the other day the case of a shoemaker who bought an allotment in Edmonton, Alberta, fitteen yeara ago for £75, and sold it lant year for £10,075. Vancouver a few years ago had a population of 30,000, ana old residents had not much faith in its future. Then came an influx of population, and land values began to rise, and haye been rising ever since. To-day'the population is 100.000. An old resident gladly accepted £IOO for his land four years ago; to-day it is worth £BOO. The Royal Bank ot Canada paid £24,506 for land that the vendor had bought for £2BO ten years previously. Three years ago a man bought a lot in Hastings Street for £I,BOO, and this year refused £IO,OOO or it. Fifteen years ago a lady bought a corner section'for a few hundred dollars, and announced her i ntention of holdi ing it until it was worth £4,000. Years passed, and she was offered that sum, but she said she would wait until it was worth £B,OOO. In a year or so she refused £B,OOO, and said she wanted £12,000. To cut the story short, she refused £16,000 for it early this year, and to-day it is worth £20,000, and she is still unsatisfied. Four years ago a man bought three acres in a new suburb for £3O, and then went Home and forgot all about it. When be returned this year he was offered £3,000 for it.
