A STEAMER DAMAGED.
CRASHES INTO A CLIFF.
Received December 20, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, December 20. The Illawara and South Coast Steam Navigation Company's steamer Eden arrived last night, with her bow badly smashed.. The yessel crashed into a high cliff at Cape St. George during a dense fog. Her forward bulkhead saved her from sinking with one hundred passengers aboard. Although the forward compartment was ftyoded, the vessel was able to make port. Her forefoot was completely torn aWay. The cliff loomed out of the fog suddenly, and the vessel «*as brought up standing before the order "Full speed astern!" could be carried out. The shoc,k threw many passengers off their feet The boats were got out and the passengers served with lifebelts, but the steamer meanwhile sheered off. An examination showed that the j vessel Was perfectly dry from the I bulkhead aft.
