Friday. A concert under the auspices of the Ciarevilla School was given in the Hall at Clareville last evening, and was well,attended. The programme Was an excellent one, and was greatly enjoyed by the audience. The. kiniterspiel, "Sisters Three" was very well performed, and the fuctiun was a credit to the teachers. It is expected that the gross takings will amount to about £l4. A new timber bridge of two spans, 50 feet and 20 feet, is to be erecte d across the Maungaterere River, two miles south of Carterton. The annual picnic of the Belvedere State School took place this afterxioon, the gathering providing pleasant enjoyment for all who attended. Oat crops are already being cut in and around this district. The combined Friendly Societies' picnic committee met last evening, in the Foresters' Hall. It was resolved to ask the Railway Department if it would provide accommodation to carry any of the picnickers on the ordinary evening train, if they decided to remain behind after the special left. It was reported that several trophies had already been promised for sports, and a committee was appointed to allot same. Several small matters were attended to. The scholars of the High School staff yesterday afternoon presented .Miss Moreton with a solid silver inkstand and a pretty cut glass smelling salts bottle, as tokens of appreciation of the interest taken by her in them during the few months that she has been acting as relieving teacher. Last evening the relatives interested in the estate of the late Mrs Hooker assembled at the residence of Mr E. A. Beard, and presented Mr 3. Moncrieff, who has acted as
trustee of the estate, with a useful oak tray, with solid silver rail, and silver tablet inscribed, as a token of their appreciation of his services. The gift came as a surprise to Mr Moncrieff, who suitably acknowledged it. The local school broke up yesterday afternoon for the summer vacation. Between fifty and sixty attendance certificates were distributed by the chairman, (Rev. W. J. Elliott) of the school committee.
