SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.

Speaking in the House of Representatives yesterdny, the Pri »e Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) said that an attempt had been made to establish again the line from between AiH< land and San Francisco, but there waw no subsidy granted by the Amercian Goverment to steamers not on the United States register. The subsidy required would be from £BO,OOO to £IOO,OOO, which was prohibitive. He knew that at the old rates at which the former line ran there was no hope of the Americans or anyone else taking up this service, che loss having been so great, unless there was a subsidy of the amount named. It was almost certain that the United States Congress would soon pass their Shipping Subsidy Bill, and if it passed there was reason to believe that the Oceanic or some other company would run a line from San Francisco to Sydney, via Honolulu. He thought, therefore, that the time was approaching when there would be a steamer service running again between Auckland and Ssn Francisco, a great deal depending on what the United States Government Aid.
