It is worth noting that although the Prime Minister stated in moving the second xeaiing of the Stamp I)utie3 Amendment Bill that the 2| per cent, tax on race claba would be on their total receipts, the wording of the Bill itself is as follows:—''The duty of 1J per cent, imposed by Section 142 of the principal Act is hereby increased to 2§ per cent, in respect' of every race meeting held after the passing of this Act or in progress at the date of the passing thereof." The duty referred to in Section 142 of-the principal Act is a tax upon the gross takings of totalisators. ihedutyof 10s per cent, imposed on issues of banknotes by the principal Act is increased to 15s by the amending measure.
