Mr Joseph Chamberlain, in a letter to the Manchester and Salford electors, urging tariff reform, says: "I hope we shall no longer slam the door in the colonies' face, believing that fiscal reform will bring our kinsmen across the water closer, and that they, at all events, will be quite ready for the change."

John Burns, speaking at Battersea. dwelt on the Government's achievements on behalf of tne workers, and declared that the state should prohibit married women from working. , Mr R. B. Haldane, Secretary of State for War, speaking at Dunbar, gaid that the taxation of necessaries led to socialism. He was in favour of Home Rule and women suffrage.
