AN OARSMAN DROWNED.

Edward Hackett, an old resident of Wanganui, and once a well-known oarscaan, was drowned in the river at midnight on Thursday. He had been out walking at Parapara, and when coming home called at the house of Fred Allen on the river bank in order to borrow a boat to row down the river, and so save a walk of two and a-half miles. He procured the boat and shortly afterwards Allan heard a cry for help. He investigated, but no sign of the man could be found. The body has not yet Lees reeoverjd.
