SWIMMING MATTERS.
IMPORTANT MEETING OF WAIRARAPA AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB.
ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR BIG CARNIVAL. An important meeting of the Management Committee of the Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club was held last evening, there present the Captain (Mr E. R. B. Daniel) in th 3 chair, Vice-Captain v Mr F. Pryor), and Messrs F. B. Rosson, J. Georgeson, B. Claysnn, G. Cullen, and the secretary (Mr E. McEwen). The chief business before the meeting was the question of whether the terms offered by the Borough L'ouncil to the Club for use of the Park oi Anniversary Day, was satisfactory to the Club, and should be accepted. Considerable discussion ensued on the point. It was generally thought the Council had not treated the club a3 generously as might be expected, bjt members agreed that a specific charge of ten pounds, instead of a levy of 33 l-3rd per cent, on the gross takings, was a much better basis of payment. It was finally agreed to accept the Council's terms. The committee then went exhaustively into the matter of arranging fir a monster carnival on the Lake 0 i the day mentioned—Anniversary 1 ay. A motion was unanimously carried to call a general meeting of the Club for Monday evening next, to which public sympathisers would be invited, for the purpose of setting np committees in connection with the carnival.
The meeting went briefly into the matter of a suitable programme of events. Usiug last year's as a guide they compiled what was deemed a more suitable list of competitions. Thi3 draft was finally refo r d to a programme committee, consisting of Messrs Daniel, McEwer, and Ueorgeson, who were instructed to invite Mr Alf. Snowball, an enthusiastic and capjble aquatic instr.ii tor, to assist them to a final arrangement. The question of making the gathering an improvement on ths two previous ones fr>m the standpoint of side-shows was debate:! at lensrth. The chairman imparted to the meeting certain information relative t > the engaging of a merry-go-rouo 1 and a shooting gallery, and the meeting deputed him to - make what arrangements he thought suitable in that connection. Other suggestions as to furnishing popular attractions were discussed, and the meeting finally deterred setting up a side show committee until the general meeting on Monday evening.
The chairman was authorised to interview the Garrison Band officials in order to engage the Band's services for the day and evening. The meeting unanimously decided to hold a grand evening entertainment, to include fireworks and other attractions. It was left open for arrangements to be made for the engagement of firework specialists. The question of catering was held over pending inquiries. A printing committee, composed of the secretary and Mr Cullen, was set up. Other details relative to the gathering were discussed, and these will again be brought up at Monday's meeting of the Club.
