THE STATE MINE STRIKE.

The State colliers have attempted to disorganise the whole sjitsem of business in the coal trade, they have not hesitated to defy the spirit of the aw, they have refused the offer of reasonable arbitration, they are taking advantage of their position to hector and domineer the Government of the country, and if they are successful the whole fabric of industrial arbitration falls to the ground, saya the "Southland News." We earnestly exhort the Government to be firm; to afhow that the democracy is not the weak, miserable thing its enemies would make us believe; that when occasion requires it can strike with full force. These men have no hardship to complain of, they have no real grievance, they are aiming at making themselves the law of their trade, they can on no account be further parleyed with. The Government should intimate that rather than give way they will leave the mine idle. Above all things, let them consult Parliament immediately.
