A STUDY IN INCOMES.
Attached to the Budget this session is a return showing how the income tax assessment was distributed for he year 1907-8. Tradtrs, manufacturers and businesses paid, of course, the biggest sum, the aggregate taxable incomes of 932 companies be ing £8,733,321. This returned £186,666 to the exchequer. Traders and business firms to the number of 4,98S earned £4,153,430, and paid out of it £87,716 in income tax. "Various" is a classification prob ably including those relying exclusively on private incomes. They numbered 396, and paid a tax of £4,177 upon over a quarter of a million of income. Professional earnings aggregated £789,587 for 1,069 individuals who were taxed to the extent of £12,726. As an indication of how the salaried men who manage the numberless industrial and State activities in New Zealand are remunerated, the details are full of information. Salaries above £3OO range from those of the 1,20 C men who get hetwpen £3OO and £4OO to the lucky individual who earns £4,813 per annum in salary. The whole class paid £12,408 under the tax, and the following shows the gradations in the scale: —
