Seventy police were sent from Sydney to Newcastle last night. Mr Peter Bowling and Mr Brennan, secretary of the Colliery Employees Federation, travelled by the same train, and there was a large crowd at the station to welcome them. Shortly after arrival the police arrested Messrs Bowling and Brennan on charges or conspiracy. Later Mr Burns, treasurer of the Amalgamate d Coal and Shale Workers' Association, was arrested. Large crowds followed the police to the lock-up. There was some hustling and hooting, but no violence.
PUBLIC SPIRITED ACTION. ATTEMPTS AT "BLEEUING" TO BE CHECKMATED. SYDNEY, December 4. The Premier, Mr Wada, has issued a statement showing that the Bellambi Coal Company offered the Railway Commissioners 7,000 tons of coal at prices prevailing belore the strike, and that the otfer had been accepted. The Premier commended this public spirited action to other owners, and added that if private owners attempted to exploit the public the Government w ul l step in and secure coal from any source. They would checkmate any attempt to bleed the community. Mr Peter Bowling informed an in terviewer that he was not surprised that the coal lumpers had refused to handle the Palermo's coal. He did not think any self-respecting Unionist would handle "scab" coal.
When Mr Hughes heard of Mr Bowling's statement, he gave is views to the press. He declared that Mr Bow lings' attitude was different from that which he had assumed at the Strike Congress. He must djc ine to permit Mr Bowling, or any other man, to "run with the hare and hunt with the hounds." Mr Bowling voted for the resolution in favour of the coal being handled, and even offered to go to the coal lumpers and tell them to handle it

The electric lighting of Sydney can be maintained till January 10th, but gaalightine will cease in eleven days. The municipal authorities are fitting up lamps to burn kerosane. The Railway Commissioners are fiting up several locomotives to take oil fuel.

Mr Forsjth, of the Duilsy Colliery, representing the o*m.rs, Mr Pateison, President of the Federated Coal Shale Workers" Union, representing the miners, with Judue Schelea as chairman, will form the Compulsory Wages Board in connection with the strike.
A speciil meeting of the Lumpers' Union is to be held on Monday, to consider an offer by the manager of the P. and O. Company tj withdraw thj Paleruu's crew, who are working the coa!, if the lumpers will reconsider t'l ir decision and c»ns2nt t) hurdle the coal. The strike'leaders will explain the position at Monday's meeting.
