SPORTING.

RACING.

turf notes. (By "Zetland"). Wairarapa will be well represented at Woodville on Wednesday and Thursday next. Trainers M. McGrath, R. Knox, H. Fletcher, J. J. Gravestoek, W. Garrett, H. McPhee, N. Williams and L. A. Crawford will •be taking horses through to compete at the fixture. The new railway timetable that comes into force next week will suit passengers from this part better than the previous one. Blue Bell, by Young Grandmaster, dam of Ngatitoa, Hikatoa and Merrie Chimes, died at Kaiwaiwai this week. She was bred in Queensland by the late Hon. James Tyson.

By winning the principal event at Feilding on Wednesday. Merrlvonia ran up to her best form, and her owner was doubtless glad to find that her New Zealand Cup meeting exertions had left no ill effects. The Merriwee mare should cun.tin.ue to pay her way during the season if well placed. The well-known horseman, J. MeCombe, who recently handed back his jockey's license, is said to be the new owner of the Menschikoif—Ar~ milla colt, Tawhaki. Very few hofsea in New Zealand have retained their speed like Lord Soult. Five years ago he put up a six furlongs record at Feilding, and this week won the Feilding Stakes, five furlongs, from a good field in last time. The Soult gelding is always more or less unsound, and does not stand a strong preparation. Nevertheless he generally manages to cope with the opposition, and is a very payable horse to his owner, Mr J. Symons, of Foxton. Needlemaid, a very promising mare, that dead-heated with Lady Doris at Dannevirke met with an accident last week in which a tendon was so badly strained that she may not race again.

Mr H. McManaway's North East, who met with an accident in the Stewards' Handicap, at the C J.C. Meeting, has sufficiently recovered to be taken back to Wansanui. Mahuta is to be put into work again shortly, and will be raced in the autumn.

Mr G. P. Donnelly, of Hawke'a Bay, has again entered the ranks of racing owners, and has engaged J. McLaughlin as his private trainer Arnphianser, winner of the Scurry at Feilding, is owned by Mr D. Buick, M.P., Palmerston North, who has been very Euccessful this season with Aberbrothock. Mr Buick can be counted among the fortunate owners, as with a small number ol horses, including Tangimoana, Rangipapa and Aberbrothock, he has won a fair number of races.
