CARTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(From Our Own Correspondent).

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, the Mayor (Mr Adam Armstrong) presiding. The treasurer reported debit balances as under:— General account, £676 12s Scl; gas, £433 lis 9d, Victoria Street special rate, £1 12s 3d; Wyndham Street special rale, £1 5s 4d; tfhodes Street drainage, £l6 4s; water rate, £lll 10s 2d. The following accounts were in credit :-- Drainage loan, £SB 12s Gd; Pembroke Street loan, £5 8s Id street improvement loan, construction, £100; total debit balance, £992 lis 2d. Accounts amounting to £375 Gs 4d we're passed for payment. The Engineer reported that the Rhodes Street sewer and connections had been put in, and a start made with the work of putting the footpaths in order. The new filter bed at the watar works has been placed in commission, and the distributing tank swept out. The necessary footpath work on Brooklyn Road has been carried out, and the long grass and weeds on some of the side streets had been cut. The work of kerbing and channelling a portion of High Street will be put in hand immediately. It was recommended that a portion of Hign Street be tarred. If the work was properly carried out it would last a long time, and would go a long way towards combating the dust nuisance.

The question of tarring of the streets was left to the works committee, with power to act.

The gas committee reported that during the month 268,000 feet of gas had been manufactured; 194,200 had been used by'customers; 22,210 feet by street lamps, 3,000 feat by the Post Office clock, and 7,200 by the gasworks engine, leaving'a total of 41,500 feet unaccounted for. The committee, during the coming month, intended testing the gasworks meter to endeavour to find out how the leakage occurred. The number of meters in use by consumers was 198.""

Mr C. (Miller, sanitary inspector, reported that the health conditions of the Borough were satisfactory. One case of diphtheria had occurred, and one of scarlet fever. Both patients had been sent to the hospital, and the places properly attended to. The building inspector reported that only one psrmit had been issued during the month. An application for the erection of an extension of a building in the brick area, for W. J. Stevens, was referred to the works committee.

Messrs Hollings and Fragnell, solicitors, of Maaterton, wrote, on behalf of a client, claiming the proceeds of sale of horses sold in the pound.—The letter was received. " Mr T. Kempton wrote applying for permission to connect his property at West Taratahi with the

high pressure schcin-_\ The request was declined. Mr W. Wright and four other settlers wrote asking that Phillips' Road be formed. The Mayor stated that this road had never been taken over by the Council, and so nothing could be done. It was decided that a reply be sent to that effect. Mr T. E. Maunsell, secretary of the Small Biros Nuisance tion, wrote asking the Council for assistance in connection with the Small birds p:st. It was decided to reply that the Council had no funds for the purpose. Delegates to vote at the election of trustees for the various hospitals and charitable aid boards were appointed as follows:—Pahiatua Hospital, Mr G. G. Iaylor; Grey town Hospital, Cr Lavery; Masterton Hospital, the Mayor; Wellington Benevolent Trustees, Cr Masson. Jt was dacided that the Council hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Pecember 21st, instead ot the 28th. It was also resolved that allr ates unpaid after fourteen days be sued for.
