NEWCASTLE STRIKE.
GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION. NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING FOR A SETTLEMENT. United Press Association—By ElccjJ-iu Copyright, Received December 1, 8.50 p.m. SYDNEY, December J.In the Assembly, in reply to a question, Mr Lee (Acting Premier) stated that as a result of Government intervention negotiations were proceeding- between the parties concerned in the strike. Thoy had been given till to-morrow to come to an arrangement, failing which a compulsory board would be appointed on Friday. Giving evidence before tha Colliery Wages Board a prominent Newcastle proprietor declared that the foreign coal trade had recently fallen off 5 per centum owing to freights, financial troubles and general depression As a result of the present strike the next year's contracts had been placed elsewhere, and their foreign ♦rade lost for that year.
COAL FROM STRIKERS' MINE. Received December 1, 10.10 a.m. SYDNEY, December 1. The first coal from the strikers' mine at Ebbw Main amounted to 300 tons. The Railway Department took half. It is understood the Railway Commissioners consider a reasonable price is between 10s and 15s per ton.
