During their confinement in the sealed-up Cherry pit, Waite and Clelland, the mining heroes, and their immediate supporters, had a furious hand-to-hand fight with the Lithunians, who argued that all water should be given to the strong, adding—"The sick will die any way." Brandishing their knives, the Lithunians aougl.t to steal the water, which was stored in holes. Waite and Cklland struck them down, established guards, and insisted on a double supply for their weaker and disabled comrades. The explorers last night reached the lowest level, where air was found, also water. They hope to reach more survivors.
