PAHIATUA NEWS.

The last fire that occurred in the Pahiatua Borough was on November 12th, 1908. This should be pleasing news to the fira insurance companies Mr Gordon Mackay, of Masterton, will assist with hagpipe music at Mr and Mrs Norrell's farewell social this evening. The "wind-up" of Miss Warren's dancing classes was held last evening. There was a large number pre • sent, an la very enjoyable evening was spent. A meting of the i'ahiatua Racing Club will be held in the Commercial Hotel on Tuesday evening next, at
8 o'clock. All day to-day the secretary, treasurer and the committee of the Worrell farewell social, have been exceedingly busy. The hall is beautifully decorated, and the above members are to be congratulated on the successful arrangements. This evening Mr Norrell is to be presented with a purse of - sovereigns for the purpose of purchasing plate, the committee not having time to effect a purchase, and an exceedingly handsome travelling rug is to be given to Mrs Norrell. The' chair will be J taken by his Worship the Mayor (Mr D. Crewe), who will also make the presentations. At the cattle fair to-day held by Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., over 2,000 head of cattle were yarded, and comment was nude on the exceptionally gaod quality of the stock. The attendance was very large and bidding was brisk. Good prices were obtained, and there were very lew pens submitted that were not sold under the hammer. The auctioneer, Mr 0. C. G>oper, had a very trying time, but was in good form, and at the commencement of the sale, thanked Dalgety and 'Jo. and the New Zealand Loan at d Mer ■ canlils for the use of their yards, ancKalso the help ot their respective stalfs.
PAHIATUA HOSPITAL TRUSTEES. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Hospital Trustees was held in the Borough Council Chambers, on Thursday afternoon. There were present:—Messrs G. Godfrey Taylor (chairman),G..A. Burgess, S. Bolton, J. Boagey, H. J. Eames and E. B. Hare.
Mr E. Dsrley waited on* the Board as a deputation irora the local Foresters' Court with reference to obtaining concessions for members of that Lodge. It waa decided that the Society be offered the privilege of purchasing blank admission tickets at £1 each, not less than five to be purchased per annum. Some discussion arose with regard to the amount charged for the water supply to the Hospital, and the Secretary was instructed to furnish the Borough Council with an estimate of the quantity used, and the Trustees offered a fixed sum per annum for the supply.
Ten patients were admitted to the Hospital during the month of October; eleven were discharged, one leaving four patients at present in the institution. Accounts amounting to £9B la lOd were passed for payment.
WOODVILLE NOTES.
' A farewell social was tendered to Mr R. Boyens, in the Foresters' Hall last evening. As a slight token Of the esteem in which he was held by his companions, Mr Boyens was presented with a silver alu'ving outfit, Mr McDonald making the presentation, to which the recipi' ent suitably replied. During the evening songs were sung by Miss Hutchins and Messrs Cartwright and McDonald, and recitations by Messrs Haughie, C. Pease and Cartwright. Good dance music was supplied by Mr James, Mrs Wright, Miss Loader and Mr Olsen played extras. Messrs J. Ryan and McDonald capably acted as M.C.'s. The Methodist choir, assisted by friends, will render the cantata "Day and Night" in the Pahiatua Method- j st Church on Wednesday evening ' next. Mr P. Davie, who secured three first prizes at the recent Napier competitions, has three solos to sing. The town canvassing committee, in connection with the Bush districts A. and P. As - 1 n m t th
very good success in regard to tro • phieil and subscriptions for the next Show, which is to be held in the latter part of January next. Good progress is being made with the Presbyterian Church in the course of erection in Mac Lean street. When finished the building will be a very handsome structure.
