CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The weather for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting showed a decided improvement on that of Saturday,being fine and warm—at times almost oppressively so. The course was in capital order, and the attendance was very good. The racing was interesting throughout, and with good fields speculation was brisk. The totalisator investments amounted to £23,012, as eompired with £22,314 for the correpsonding duy lust, y< ar. There were three spills in the hurJle race, but none of the rkiers wera seriously hurt. Elysian's win in t ie Derby was very popular. Result 3:— Middleton Hurdles, of 200sovs, one mile and thrtequarters.— Southern Cross 10.3, 1; Xavier 10.12, 2; Whatakura 10 10, 3. Also started - Slaney 11.9, Belario 10.13, Tyrannic 10.0, Forest 9.11, Waipunehu 8.7, and Ratepayer 9.0. Won easily by three lengths and a half. Slane y, Belario and Waipunehu fell. Time,. 3min 2lsec.
. Criterion Handicap, of 500 sovs, seven furlongs.— Kilindini 7.0, I; Nautiform 8.3, 2: Penates 9.9, 3. Also strated—Gold Crest 9.9, Flitaway 8.8, Bollon 7.13, Miss Mischief 7.9, Sweet Angelus 7.5, Ilarita 7.3, Trugahini 7.1, and Ingoda 6.7. Kilindini led all the way, and lasted long enough to win by a head. Penates was a length away. Time, lmin 28sec.
Epsom High Weight Handicap, of 300sovs., six furlongs.—Balaclava 8.11, 1; Valdimar 8.7, 2; Perle d' Or 8.9, 3. Also started—Czar Kolohol 10.9, St. Bill 10.2, Sea King 9.9, Nylard9.7, Dolce 9.2, Passion 8.13, Swimming Belt 8.13, White Cockade 8.12, Fasnaykle 8.11, Zetland 8.7, Dreailess 8.5, Gunboat 8.4, Inchbonny and Marengo B.U. Won by a length and a half, the same distance being between the second and third horses. Time, lmin 15 2-ssec.
Derby Stakeß, of 1,000 sove; for three year mile and a half. —Elysian 8.10,*1; Tawhaki 8.10, 2; Taskmaster 8.10, , 3. Also started—• Gianforte, Cronstadt, Kilwinning and St. Felix 8.1. Eiysian, who was always in a handy position, drew away Inside the distance and 'won by two lengthi. TasKmaster was a sim ilar distance behind Tawhaki, with Guianforte a head away fourth. Time, 2min 3ys«c.
Juvenile Plate, of 400 sovs, fiye furlongs.—Formby 8.0, 1; Madam Madcap 6.6, 2; Mormedon 6.11, 3. Also started—Multiple 9.0, Broadsword 8.7, Theodore 8.7, and Scotch Plaid 8.2. Formby was in front entering the course proper, and holding his advantage won by a length and threequarters. Time, lmin 0 3-ssec. Metropolitan Handicap, of 1,000 sovs, one mile and a half.—Aberbrothock 7.7, 1; Ringdove 7.7, 2; Prim 7.11, 3. Also started—All Red 9.9, Roosevelt 8.5, "Merrie Zealand and Muskerry 8.4, Sandstream 7.13, Gwendolina 7.7, Chanteuse 7.1, King Post 7.0. Rose Noble 6.13, and Stratagem 6.8. Ringdove made practically all the running, but in the straight Aberbrothock came with a great run, and won by two lengths. Prim was three parts of a length away, with Roosevelt close up. Irwell Hanidcap. of, 2DO sovs, for two year olds, four furlongs.—Warsong 8.6, 1; Tenterhook 7.9, 2; Saxifrage 8.0, 3. Also started— Lord Kelvin 8.5, Master Laddo, Crown Derby and Puaka 8.0, Lily White, Martine. Deploy, Antoinette and Catche 7.9, Enyo 7.0, Fireglow 6.12, Perm 6.9. .and Frivollite 6.7. Won easily by two lengths, a neck between second and third. Time, 48 2-ssec.
Otaio Pkte, of 300 sovs, one mile and a half.—First Gun 8.13, 1; Oiyoi 9.13, 2; Bourrasque 9 12, 3. Also started.—Chief Lochiel 9.5, Boutade 8.11. Dabchick 8,11, Bulletin 8.9, Lawn Rose 8.8, Gold Braid 8.4, Puzzle Pretty Nell and Aisy 8.0. Won by a neck. Bourrasque was a length and a half away third. Time, 2mi» 38 2-ssec.
