LAWN TENNIS.
MASTERTON OLUB.
The opening of the tennis season in Masterton took place on the Masterton Lawn Tennis Club's Courts on Saturday afternoon last. Favoured by splendid weather members and their friends turned out in large numbers, causing the picturesquely situate grounds to present quite an animated appearance. During the course of the afternoon a number of moat enjoyable games were played, and the afternoon tea provided by the Club was much appreciated by the players and visitors present.
For some weeks past the Club's groundsman, Mr F. Treader, has been busy in preparing the courts for tne season's play, and the manner in which he has succeeded in his work was the subject ol most favour able comment by many of those pre-sent-quite common remark being "have * never seen the courts look better." At all events they certainly looked well, and their placing qualij ties did not belie their looks. Entries for a handicap doubles competition to be plaved on the af-1 ternoon of Tuesday, November 9th, were invited, and ' secured a fair amount of support, considering that the season has only just commenced. A match with the Dannevirke Club, to be played at Dannevirke, on November 30th—St. Andrew's Day —is already being spoken of, view of this probability members are recommended to obtain as much steady practice as possible in the interval.
