DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
BIG BLAZE IN HOBART. DAMAGE AMOUNTS TO ABOUT £15.000. United Press Association—Electric Telegraph Copyrißht. Received November 5 11.30 p.m. HOBART, November 5. The largest fire experienced here for five years occurred to-day, destroying the old Exhibition buildings* wihch were occupied by Roberts and Company, grain merchants, AbbottV freezing works, the Elite skating rink, and a number of drapery, fruit and other shops. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and caused the flames to spread very rapidly, quickly destroying the main building. The firemen, who were handicapped through several ot their number having recently resigned as a protest against the appointment of a Mel bourne man as superintendent of the Brigade, mainly confined their efforts to savinc the surrounding buildings, several of which were damaged. Some of the firemen and their volunteer assistants were overcome by heat and smoke. It is estimated that the damage will amount to about £15,000.
