REMAINING NATIVE LANDS.

The general position of native lands in the North Island is shown in a return presented to the House by the Hon. James Carroll. Of the total of 7,461.000 acres, 3,400,000 are reported to be pi Itably occupied, leaving an approximate balance 3,994,727 acres. The actual area available for settlement is 2,288,240 acres, so that the area unprofitably held is reduced to 1,706,487 acres, of which 490,752 acres are papatupu ' land, the titles to which have not been investigated. A large area, states the report, is held by Europeans, either by informal leases or for short terms for grazing purposes. These are held, for the purpose of the return, to be not profitably occupied. In the Taupo and inland Patea districts are 550,000 acres, for the J most part poor land, which cannot bo I

profitably utilised for many years to come. The area of native land now available for general settlement is 1,629,144 acres.
