CALIFORNIA SCRATCHED. By Telegraph—Presa Association. CHRISTCHURCH, November 2. California was at 10.30 to day scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury J. C. Meeting. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH. November 2. The proceedings at Riccarton today were exceedingly interesting. The tracks were very fast. Husbandman covered a mile and a half in 2min 39 3-ssec. Penates galloped six furlongs, doing the last five in lmin 3 1-Bsec. Elysian beat First Gun over a mile, which took lmin 44sec. Prim defeated Bollin by eight lengths in a mile and a half gallop, which took 2min 45 2-ssec. Lady Lucy and Sir Prize went a mile and a quarter in 2min 9 3-ssec. Full Sail •was better than Sharpshooter over a mile, done in lmin 44sec. Downfall, Sandstream, and Master Soult went a mile and a half on the grass in 2 rain 39 2'ssec, Sandstream having the best of the gallop all through. ' Nyland'beat Daybeam in a six furlong spin in lmin 17sec. Tikitere went a ' mile and a half in 2min 28 l-ssec; it 1 was a pleasing effort. Bobrikoff ! covered a mile and a quarter in 2min 6 4-ssec—a record for the track. Boutade was better than Grand Siam ; over a mile "and a quarter. Musker- * ry cleared away from Merrie ZealL and and Lawn Rose over the same " distance. Passion galloped six furlongs in lmin 14 3 ssec. '" Among the two year olds the best s gallops were done by Formby, Forsnedon, Kohinoor, and Madam Madcap. A large number of others were exercised.

Heavy rain tell during the night and throughout the morning, and 'training' operations were preformed under very unfavourable circum:stancaa. Very little work of importance was registered. All the work was done on the sand, except a tew gallops by two year olds on the course proper. Sir Ayetal did three ■furlongs in 40sec, Advocate six furlongs in Imin 22sec, Hyperion •beat Rarata by three lengths over 7 furlongs in lmin 35 3-saec. Dr Sbimose and Rohepotae covered the' (same distance in lmin 87sec, finishing together. Spectie easily held Bully once round, in 2min 7sec. After breakfast the rain ceaspd. Santa Rosa and Waitnangu went fl.ven f.rlonga in lmin S6e€c;
Coronetted, Sedition and Delegate were in that order at the end of a similar iourney, run in lmin 36 3-sec; Tamainupo was better than Tattoo over the same ground, in lmin 35 4-ssen; Dogger Bank finished in front of Turbine over five furlongs in lmin Bsec; Aristocrat went a furlong further in imin 26 4-ssec. On the course proper, Apellow and Ashby, together, did 3 furlongs in 41 2-ssec; Vivace and Echo oc:ußied the same time over the samt; journey; Doughboy registered 40 3-ssec for the same distance. Goldfinder spirted two furlongs twice at intervals, the first time in 29 4-ssec, and the sßcand in 26 2-ssec. Quinlivan arrived this morning with Bally Shannon, Maori King, and Winning Post TARATAHI-CARTERTON ACCEPTANCES. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps, and entries for the Trial Plate and Maiden Scurry, to be run at the , Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's annual race meeting at Clarevi 11 e f on November 9th and 10th, close with the secretary, Mr J. B. Bairstow, Carterton, at 9 30 o'clock to night. The telegraph office at Cartertsn is closed at 8 o'clock.
