MR GLADSTONE'S RUMOURED APPOINTMENT.
BITTER DISCUSSION
Received October 31, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, October 30. A bitter discussion is proceeding in South Africa over Mr H. Gladstone's rumoured appointment to the Governor Generalship. Many object to a name which is associated with the bitterest controversy in' South African history. DURBAN, October 30. The "Natal Mercury" says that Mr Gladstone's appointment is the worst possible selection. The "Transvaal Leader" says that Mr Gladstone's experience with the suffragettes will qualrfy him to handle the Asiatic passive registers. The "Star" says that if the choice is limited to the present Cabinet one might go further and fare worse. LONDON, October 30. The "Times" strongly opposes the appointment of a memb D r of the Government to three great positions becoming vacant in India, Canada, and Africa—especially the appointment of failures or nonentities.
