Mr R. Breen, of Otago, has besn elected president of the New Zealand Trades and Labour Council. The death occurred at Palmerston North of Mr J. G. *joopsr. at one time secretary to the Rewa Dairy Company. Mr Cooper, who has been ill for some considerable time, was a general favourite, and was unmarried. Mr E. A. Osmond, of Stratford, who for the past nine years, has held a responsible position in the Government Life Department, has accepted an appointment as district manager for l'aranaki of the National Mutual 4 Life Association, Ltd., with headquarters at Strat' ford.
Dr. Frengley (Government Health Officer), Mr C. J. Reikes (Chief Veterinarian) and Mr H. A. Reiri (Govern nent Veterinarian), after visiting the Waingawa in connection with the meat works site> journeyed on to Carterton, where they caught the mail train for Wellington. Mr Robert McNab, writing from America by the lasc mail to a friend in Wellington:—"l have got as far New Bedford, a'd after visiting Providence. Newport and Nantucket. I will run down to New York and take steamer to London. At Salem, boston, and here I have met a number of friends I made when running through about three years ago They all take a warm interest in New Zealand, and I have become a regular lecturer on its wonders.'' Ths Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Nelson, ohristchurch, Timaru, Oamaru. Dunedin, Mataura, and Southland Presbyteries have nominated the Rev. J. H. Mackenzie (Nelson) as Moderator for 1910-11. vVaikato, 'Westland, Clut'm, and Dunstan Presbyteries have nominated the Rev. P. B. Fraser, M.A. (Lovell's Flat); Taranaki Presbytery has nominated the Rev. W. M'Ara (Kaikoura); the Wanganui Presbytery has nominated the Rev A. Cameron, B.A. (Anderson's Bay, Dunedin) ; and th? Aackland Presbytery has nominated the Kev. W. Gray Dixon (Auckland). The death is announced of Mr J. Fedor Augustus Ktllmg, in his 90th year. He was a German, and came fiom Macklenburg Sehwerin, settling in vVaimea Eai.t, Nelson, in 1844. Previously, he had been farming in Uir.nany, after a nigh school education of a course of surveying In 1857 he was selected a member of the N.lson Provincial Council, and in 1860 was chosen a member of the New Z aland Parliament. It is belhved that the only other survivor of that Parliament is Sir John Campbell, of Auckland. The late Mr Keiling was Gorman Consul in Nelson from 1867 to 1884, and waa decorted with the German Order of ths crown for his sirvices. He waa thrice mvried, and is survived by three sons —IVlr K, Keiling, who i 3 f»r mnj his lata father's prope.ty, "Rantzau," Nelson; MrG. C. Keiling, Clerk of the Court, Nelson; Mr b'. K. Kellin?, of the Government Life Insurance Department. His only surviving daughter is Mrs J. M. Broucher, of Richrno ;d, Nelson.
The death is reported of .an old resident, of Paimerstori North, in the person of Mrs Kei!-', relict of the lata Mr J. F. Kells, of Palmerdton. The dpceased ladv had attained the age of 76 when the and cama peacefully. She wai one of the pioneer settlers, having arrived in New Zealand hy the ship Burman on March Is 1 :, 1842, and suffered many of the hardships of life in the Domir.ion in the early days. Fo r 10 years past she had resided in Palmerston North, and was also a resident of Wanganui for many years Three daughters Mrs Foster and Mrg A. B. Rowlands, of PalYnerslon North, and Mrs Capt. Charker, of the Salvation Army—and three sons—Ensign Foster Kell?, of the Salvation Army (Australia), Messrs G. R. Kelis, Karori, and W. R Kells, the well known rifle shot—Rurvive their mother. Mr Kells, senior, who died several years ago, came to New Zealand ii< the 65th Regiment with four other brothers, all of whom served in the Maori war. '
